Mike, Paul & Cynthia - all great points, thanks for joining in the discussion.

Mike is right, solo travelling jaunts can be the perfect time to fire up your extrovert personality, even if you're normally a bit on the shy side. The way I see it, you will (probably) never see these people again. That can help counteract any insecurities about rejection or saying something stupid.

Although, for the solo travelling female, I have found it is a bit more difficult to lose a persistent admirer who you may not be interested in if you haven't got your girlfriends around to 'save' you... so perhaps a little discretion in who you're chatting up is the key :)

Great tips. I sometimes travel with friends, but for all the reasons you mention (plus the added reason of not finding anyone able or willing to head for some destinations), traveling solo has been more common. I'd also add that "semi-solo" is an option, as well -- by which I mean going alone but joining a small tour. If I want to somewhere really remote and uncharted, like some parts of Mongolia, or if I'm visiting someplace that does not view women kindly, then I'll latch on to a tour -- because staying alive is an important part of a successful trip. But for most destinations, the precautions you offer are enough.

As for packing light, I'd say two of the most useful products for lightening the load are J.R. Liggett shampoo (one 3oz bar=24fluid oz of regular shampoo) and Eco-dent tooth powder (1 oz= 1 month supply -- plus, if you're traveling someplace where you need to use bottled water when brushing your teeth, powder is much easier to rinse off your brush).

An additional tip is, if you don't want the weight of a book, carry a small notebook, then use restaurant time to record your thoughts and experiences. Helps you recall more of your travels when you get home.

Hi, thanks for the link to my site :)

You've got some good tips there. I definitely agree with the advice about carrying a book; it removes some of the self-consciousness that comes along with eating alone in a restaurant...

I think the most important thing when traveling solo is to be as much of an extrovert as possible. Chat up everyone you encounter. It's the only way to fend off loneliness and stay sane.

All great points though - thanks for sharing!
